GNU GRUB

GNU GRUB is a multiboot boot loader. It was derived from GRUB, GRand Unified Bootloader, which was originally designed and implemented by Erich Stefan Boleyn.

Briefly, boot loader is the first software program that runs when a computer starts. It is responsible for loading and transferring control to the operating system kernel software(such as the Linux or Windows). The kernel, in turn, initializes the rest of the operating system (e.g. GNU).

GRUB is the reference implementation of the multiboot specification, which allows a user to have several different operating systems on their computer at once, and to choose which one to run when the computer starts. GRUB can be used to select from different kernel images available on a particular operating system's partitions, as well as to pass boot time parameters to such kernels.
